In August 2024, I was daunted by a prospect of having a total knee replacement surgery. Dr. Morcos’s credentials and expertise as an Orthopedic surgeon were impressive. After a preliminary consultation with Dr. Morcos, I was fully confident in having him perform the surgery. After we looked at the X-Ray of my knee (osteoarthritis/bone on bone scenario), he explained as to what the procedure would entail, the pre and post operative work to be done on my part, the recovery period and finally the results of having this surgery which at that time was necessary. The operation went well. In recovery, Dr. Morcos came to see me and explained the importance of doing the extensive physical therapy exercises daily for a complete and successful recovery. A six-week follow-up was scheduled. A lot more details could be provided about my post rehabilitation path, but after a year I can honestly say that it was a life-changing procedure and a successful operation. I am grateful to Dr. Morcos and I would recommend him as a professional and experienced Orthopedic surgeon.

Note: Not every patient is a candidate for these techniques. During your consultation, Dr. Morcos will recommend the safest and most effective approach for your specific situation.
Muscle Atrophy — weakened muscles from lack of mobility
Compensatory Pain — added strain on your back, hips, or other joints
Deformity Progression — worsening joint damage over time
Reduced Activity — difficulty with daily movement and independence
Decreased Quality of Life — ongoing pain that limits sleep, work, and family moments
You might be a candidate for joint replacement if you experience persistent pain that doesn't respond to conservative treatments like physical therapy or medications, pain that continues while resting, stiffness limiting your range of motion, or difficulty with daily activities like walking or climbing stairs. Dr. Morcos performs a comprehensive evaluation including physical examination, imaging studies, and discussion of your symptoms to determine if surgery is appropriate for your situation.
Robotic-assisted surgery provides enhanced precision through real-time feedback and 3D modeling of your unique anatomy. This technology allows for more accurate implant positioning, optimal alignment, and preservation of healthy bone and tissue. For patients, potential benefits include reduced post-operative pain, faster recovery times, improved range of motion, and potentially longer-lasting implants.
Recovery timelines vary based on individual factors including age, overall health, and the specific surgical technique used. Generally, patients can expect to walk with assistance within 1-2 days of surgery and begin outpatient physical therapy within 1-2 weeks. Most patients can resume light activities within 3-6 weeks and return to more demanding activities by 3-6 months. With minimally invasive approaches, many patients experience accelerated recovery timeframes.
Total knee replacement involves replacing all three compartments of the knee joint, while partial (unicompartmental) knee replacement replaces only the damaged portion while preserving healthy areas. Partial replacement typically involves smaller incisions, less bone removal, faster recovery, and more natural knee function for suitable candidates. However, it's only appropriate when arthritis is limited to one compartment of the knee with healthy ligaments and minimal deformity.
Modern implants are designed for durability, with many lasting 15-20 years or longer. Factors affecting implant longevity include your age, activity level, weight, and the specific materials used. Advances in materials science have led to more wear-resistant options like cross-linked polyethylene, ceramic, and titanium components. Dr. Morcos selects the most appropriate options based on your individual needs and lifestyle goals.
